"This outstanding event not only provides an incomparable opportunity for top operators and suppliers to network and support the restaurant and foodservice industry, but also raises awareness and funds for the NRAEF Scholarship Program," said Barb Sido, Executive Director of the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. "These scholarships enable more than 800 students to start or continue their studies in restaurant and foodservice programs each year. And ultimately, they help fill the 1.3 million new positions our industry will create over the next decade with talented and dedicated individuals. Many thanks to all who made the 2010 event our most successful to date."

The 2010 Ted J. Balestreri Leadership Classic included golf on three of the most picturesque and respected courses in the world: Monterey Peninsula Country Club Shore Course, site of the 2010 Pebble Beach National Pro-Am; Pebble Beach Golf Links, which is ranked the number one public golf course in America by Golf Digest; and The Links at Spanish Bay. The Ted J. Balestreri Leadership Cup is engraved with the names of each year's winners of the individual tournament and resides in the Pebble Beach trophy case alongside others from Pebble Beach tournaments.

This year's men's and ladies' winners with overall low-gross scores are:

  • Norb Mayrhofer, vice president, Procter and Gamble Professional
  • Lori Walrack, spouse of Kent Walrack, Lyons Magnus

This year's men's and ladies' winners with overall low-net scores are:

  • Scott Sirois, chief executive officer, Tohono O'odham Gaming Enterprise
  • Sandy Bertha, guest of Richard E. Marriott, Host Marriott Corporation

To provide attendees with a special dining experience, four ProStart students from Pacific Grove High School joined the executive chef team of the Inn at Spanish Bay to prepare a three-course meal that was served during the live auction, which was hosted by the Monterey Wine Education Foundation. ProStart, the NRAEF's high school program, each year teaches more than 83,000 students the foundational culinary and foodservice management skills.

This year's event was co-chaired by Ted J. Balestreri, chairman and chief executive officer, The Sardine Factory Restaurant; and William L. Hyde, Jr., principal, Abacus/Jasper's Restaurant and NRAEF Board of Trustees Chairman. It was sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company, Ecolab Inc., Nestlé Professional, Georgia Pacific Professional, Ignite Restaurant Group, Golden Corral, PepsiCo Foodservice, SYSCO Corporation, American Express Company, Lyons Magnus, Brinker International, United Healthcare, Procter & Gamble, Nation's Restaurant News, and CAO International.

The NRAEF Scholarship Program's 2010 goal is to award nearly $1 million in scholarships to students pursuing their education in the restaurant and foodservice industry. These scholarships are made possible through the philanthropic support of individuals and corporations from all sectors of the restaurant, foodservice, hospitality and education industries as well as consumers and friends of the industry. And the industry's support is paying off; Five years after receiving their scholarships, more than 80 percent of NRAEF scholarship recipients are still studying and/or working in the foodservice industry.
