13 civilian foodservice professionals are traveling to military bases and installations around the globe to honor the “best of the best” in military foodservice, raising the standards of military foodservice for the armed forces.

WASHINGTON, DC – February 15, 2018 – 13 civilian foodservice professionals are traveling to military bases and installations around the globe to honor the “best of the best” in military foodservice, raising the standards of military foodservice for the armed forces.

The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation’s (NRAEF) Civilian Military Travelers program enlists the help of volunteers from prominent companies in the foodservice industry to assist senior military personnel in evaluating and scoring their dining facilities for food quality, food safety, cost effectiveness and general operating procedures. All branches of the military present their annual foodservice awards at the NRAEF Military Foodservice Awards Dinner in May during the National Restaurant Association (NRA) Show in Chicago.

“For 60 years, this program has provided a unique opportunity for industry professionals to volunteer their time and talent to help improve foodservice in the military,” said Rob Gifford, executive vice president of the NRAEF. “Our volunteers are improving the quality of life for those who serve.”

The Military Travelers program was created in 1956 as part of an effort by President Dwight Eisenhower to improve the efficiencies of government agencies and raise the standards of food service for the armed forces. Award winners from each branch are recognized at the Military Foodservice Awards Dinner and participate in a management training program held in Chicago in conjunction with the NRA Show.
